Non-emergency health-related travel in Hong Kong

Appointments and health-related travel for older people

When arranging appointments, rehabilitation, treatment or journeys after discharge for an older person, prepare mobility needs, wheelchair information, building access and accompaniment details to reduce last-minute changes. KareLynk can first collect the needs for the team to review possible arrangements.

  • Returning home or to a care location after discharge.
  • Elderly centres, day-care centres or community-support services.

Information to prepare before making arrangements

  • Whether the older person can walk independently, and whether they use a walking aid, manual wheelchair or powered wheelchair.
  • Wheelchair dimensions, whether it folds and whether the passenger needs to stay in it throughout.
  • Pick-up and drop-off points, lifts, steps, ramps and building access.
  • Whether a family member or non-clinical escort is needed, and the expected return time.
  • The main contact on the day and backup arrangements for delays.

Does wheelchair transport include stairs at a home without a lift?

Confirm this separately. A vehicle journey and boarding equipment do not mean assistance on stairs inside the home has been arranged. For example, the Hong Kong Society for Rehabilitation's Rehabus FAQ states that it does not provide stair assistance. Check other services' scope with the chosen provider.

What should I ask about stairs before confirming the vehicle journey?
Separate the route into home to pick-up point, the vehicle journey, and drop-off point to destination. Confirm who takes responsibility for each part, whether there are stairs, and whether both outward and return arrangements are confirmed. Note lift availability, floors and steps, turns or landings, wheelchair needs and transfer assistance for later discussion with the relevant service staff. A confirmed vehicle journey does not mean assistance on stairs is arranged.
Can we lift the wheelchair ourselves or ask the driver to handle it on arrival?
Do not assume that a driver, escort or family member will handle lifting or operate stair-climbing equipment on the spot. The Department of Health notes that wheelchair and assistive-equipment use must take account of the user and environment, with appropriate training before operation. If stairs or transfer assistance are involved, first ask a physiotherapist or relevant service staff about a suitable assessment and arrangements. This page does not provide operating instructions.
Does an enquiry to KareLynk include stair assistance?
No. KareLynk can review non-emergency transport or non-clinical escort needs. Enquiring does not establish a stair-climber, lifting or stair-assistance service. Feasibility and who will arrange it must be confirmed separately. Your first email only needs your preferred name, contact method and enquiry category; do not attach a full home address, home photographs or medical documents.

How KareLynk follows up

After basic information is submitted, the team reviews the scope, timing and support needs, then contacts you to check the details. Transport, escort support, availability and quotations all require separate confirmation. An enquiry does not establish a service.
